FAQ's

About the Work

  • Found in the Grain creates custom laser-engraved hardwood pieces designed to preserve meaning, memory, and story. Each piece is made one at a time, with an emphasis on permanence, care, and thoughtful design.

  • Yes — Every piece involves hands-on work throughout the process. Materials are selected, prepared, and finished by hand, while laser engraving is intentionally used to achieve precision and permanence in the design. Technology supports the craftsmanship; it does not replace it.

  • Found in the Grain has evolved to focus primarily on heirloom, memorial, and statement pieces. While some work may still be functional, the core of the work is centered on pieces meant to be displayed, kept, and passed down rather than every day kitchen use.

Custom Commissions

  • The process begins with a short intake form and a brief conversation to clarify any important details. If the project is a good fit, you’ll receive the next steps outlining details about the deposit, design proof, and timeline.

Once the deposit Is received, a design proof is created for your review and approval. After approval, the piece moves into the creation phase, followed by completion and delivery. The process is guided with patience from start to finish.

  • No. You don’t need to have every detail figured out. The intake form is designed to gather what matters most, and design decisions are refined together during the process. Many clients begin with a general idea and shape the final piece through collaboration.

  • Yes. Every commission includes a design proof for review and approval before production begins. This ensures the engraving, layout, and overall direction feel right before any work is finalized.

Materials & Design

  • Found in the grain works primarily with carefully selected hardwoods chosen for durability, character, and grain.

Some commonly used species include Walnut, Maple, Oak, and Cherry, selected based on availability and what best suits the story and the design of the piece.

Because every commission is one of a kind, wood selection is guided by the needs of the work rather than a fixed catalog.

  • Some pieces feature true live-edge wood, while others use hardwood shaped to create an organic, natural feel. Edge treatment is always chosen intentionally to suit the design, material, and overall balance of the piece.

  • No — and that is intentional. Gallery pieces are shown to demonstrate past works and approach. Not as templates to be replicated.

Each piece is designed specifically for the story, space, and person that that helped bring it to life.

Timing & Process

  • Timelines vary depending on size, material, and complexity, but most commissions fall within a 2-4 week range after design approval, and not accounting for delivery time.

Timing can be effected by factors such as design refinement, material availability, and the nature of the piece itself. A clearer timeline will be confirmed once your project is underway.

  • Found in the Grain prioritizes care over speed. Rush work may be considered on a case by case basis, but is generally not recommended. The process depends on patience to maintain quality expectations regarding both material handling, and the creation of your designs.

Pricing & Payment

  • Most found in the grain commissions fall within $300-$1000+ range, depending on size, material, and overall scope.

Smaller, or simpler pieces may fall into the lower end of that range, While larger heirloom or memorial pieces often require more time, material, and design consideration.

Because every piece is custom, pricing is guided by what the work requires rather than a fixed menu. Once your request is reviewed, you’ll receive clearer steps and pricing before any work begins.

  • Yes. A deposit is required to begin the design phase. Most Found in the Grain commissions only require a small deposit of 20-30% of the total project cost. For more complex and elaborate works, the deposit may be as much as 50%.

The deposit secures your place in the workflow and allows time to be dedicated to your design, as well as material selection and preparation.

Once the deposit is received, a design proof is created for your review and approval before production begins. Final pricing and deposit details are always outlined clearly before any work moves forward.

Fit & Expectations

  • If a project isn’t aligned due to scope, timing, or availability, you’ll be notified honestly and respectfully. Found in the Grain values clarity over over-commitment.

  • Design approval happens before production to ensure alignment. Once a piece is created, revisions are typically not possible due to the custom nature of the work and the permanence of the engraving.

Shipping & Care

  • Yes. Finished pieces are carefully packaged and shipped. Local pickup may be available depending on location and arrangement.

  • Found in the Grain pieces are designed to age gracefully with simple care.

For most pieces, occasional dusting with a dry cloth or duster is all that will be needed. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, excessive heat, or prolonged moisture, as natural wood can shift over time.

If your piece includes a finished surface, it can be lightly wiped with a damp cloth when needed, then dried immediately. Harsh cleaners, abrasives, or soaking should be avoided.

Each piece is made from natural Hardwood, and subtle changes in tone or grain over time are part of the material’s character. If specific care considerations apply to your piece, they will be shared with you at delivery.
